When the same problem keeps coming back

your body may be telling a bigger story

It's time to stop treating the symptom and start understanding the pattern. Whether it's recurring back pain, persistent tension, pelvic imbalance or injuries that never seem to fully resolve, your body may have adapted in ways that keep recreating the same problem.

By looking at how your whole body works together – not just where it hurts – we can begin to release the patterns underneath and support lasting change.

Does any of this sound familiar?

"My back keeps going out."

"My neck and shoulders are permanently tight."

"One hip or knee always seems to hurt."

"My posture feels uneven."

"I don't feel balanced."

"I've tried lots of things. The problem keeps returning."

"I don't feel at home in my own body."

"I struggle to switch off and relax."

A different way to understand pain

Stepping stones symbolizing understanding and moving forward

Recurring pain is rarely just about the place that hurts. Together we'll look at how your body is working as a whole to understand the patterns of movement, compensation and tension that may be keeping the problem going.

Understand what's really happening.

Sometimes the cause is obvious. Sometimes it's an old injury, long-term stress or a way of moving that your body quietly adapted to years ago. By looking beyond the symptom, we can begin to uncover what's driving it.

Find where the pattern began.

Using gentle bodywork, muscle testing and movement-based techniques, we'll help your nervous system and muscles release patterns they no longer need to hold, allowing your body to rediscover a more balanced way of functioning.

Help your body let go.

The aim isn't simply temporary relief. By changing the patterns that keep recreating the problem - and helping you understand how to support your body between sessions - we create the best opportunity for lasting improvement.

Create change that lasts.

Who is this work for?

Photo showing the therapist working on a client's shoulder

My way of working may appeal to you if:

  • You experience persistent pain that keeps coming back

  • You have a recurring injury or weakness

  • Your pelvis is misaligned (resulting in lower back pain and instability)

  • Your nervous system is dysregulated

  • You are a highly sensitive person and/or neurodiverse and often feel overhwhelmed

  • You are recovering after surgery or an injury

  • You have tried several approaches and want to understand more about how your body and mind are interacting

How I will work with you

1. Understanding the context

Before we meet, you'll complete a health questionnaire.

This gives you an opportunity to think through all the various aspects of your health and wellbeing. It may be the first time you've explored your whole heath story in one go. It often allows us to make connections that would otherwise be missed.

2. Listening to your story

We'll begin with a conversation about your health, previous injuries, surgery, significant illnesses and, where relevant, important life events that may have influenced how your body has adapted over the years.

Sometimes people experience real lightbulb moments as connections emerge between things that previously appeared unrelated.

3. Seeing the patterns

While people usually arrive with a specific pain, the problem rarely exists in isolation. We'll start by looking at the whole picture of how your body is functioning today.

I'll observe your posture and movement and use gentle muscle testing to explore patterns and adaptations that your body may be making in order to cope.

4. Working with your body

Your body has probably spent years building patterns of adaptation and compensation. Unwinding these patterns needs to be gentle and responsive. I am guided by your body on where to begin and how fast to work.

I think of it as "peeling away layers" one at a time, allowing your body time to adapt to the changes.

5. Noticing what changes

As we work, I will encourage you to notice even subtle shifts in the way your body feels, or how it moves.

Acknowledging change strengthens the results and encourages your mind to embrace what is happening so that the changes integrate more fully.

The outcome

Before you leave, we'll reflect on what we've discovered together.

You'll leave with a clearer understanding of your body's patterns, why they may have developed and what the next steps could be to support lasting change.

Every body has a story: Real-life examples

Picture of NHW worker with persistent pain

Her body still hadn't retired

After a long and demanding career in the NHS, this client's body was holding onto specific patterns it adopted to cope with the job - even after she retired.

Balancing caused back pain

A gardener's nagging lower back pain was caused by years of adopting a specific posture for weeding.

The body forgot how to rest

After a series of traumatic events, this client's body was on permanent high alert, braced for the next emergency.

Looking for something different?

Courses, workshops and talks

Not everyone is looking for one-to-one support.

If you prefer to learn in a group setting rather than individually, I also offer courses and events throughout the year.

Questions people often ask

Can you help with persistent pain?

Many of the people I work with have been living with pain for months or even years. Some have tried physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic treatment, massage, medication or exercise programmes. Others have been told that nothing more can be done.

Persistent pain is rarely just about muscles or joints. It often reflects a combination of physical, neurological, emotional and lifestyle factors that have become intertwined over time.

Rather than focusing only on where it hurts, we'll work together to build a clearer picture of what may be contributing to your pain and what is keeping it going. I can't promise that every person's pain will improve, but many clients experience reduced pain, easier movement and a better understanding of their body.

Just as importantly, they often leave feeling more confident about what they can do to support their own recovery.

Can I have this alongside medical treatment or counselling?

The simple answer is: usually, yes. Although you should always check with your healthcare provider or counsellor before starting work with me.

If you are undergoing medical treatment, or you are recovering from surgery, it is important to share the full situation with me. We will then discuss how I can best support your recovery without my work interfering with other treatment. At the very least, I am usually able to help your body enter a state of deep rest and relaxation which optimises healing.

If you are having counselling, appropriate bodywork can support the process by helping your body to release old patterns, find greater ease and experience calm. This often helps to make psychotherapy more effective.

What if I'm not sure what's wrong?

You'd be surprised how often I hear that. You don't need a diagnosis or a clear explanation before contacting me. My role is to help you make sense of what's happening and identify the factors that may be contributing. Often, understanding the problem more clearly is the beginning of meaningful change.

Can you help if I've already tried lots of other treatments?

Many clients have already explored physiotherapy, counselling, osteopathy, massage, medication, coaching or self-help programmes. Rather than replacing those approaches, we'll step back and look at the bigger picture to understand why the problem may still be there and what might be missing.

What happens during an Initial Consultation?

I offer a 20-minute call if you'd like to ask more about how I work, or explore whether I might be the right person to support you right now. Beyond that, it's best to try a one-hour session to experience what it feels like to work with me.

There is never any obligation to continue if, after an initial session, you feel this isn't the best approach for you.

How much do I need to share?

Only what's helpful. The amount we talk depends on the kind of session you're having and what will best support you. Coaching naturally involves more conversation as we explore your situation, patterns and goals together. Bodywork may involve very little talking at all. Some people find it helpful to put their experience into words; others don't. Both approaches can be equally valuable. You remain in control of what you share, and we'll only explore what's relevant to the work we're doing together.

Can online sessions really be as effective as meeting in person?

It depends on your need.

Online sessions work particularly well for stress, burnout, decision-making, recurring life patterns and feeling stuck.

If your main concern is persistent physical pain or restricted movement, an in-person session may be the better place to begin.

I've already tried physiotherapy/osteopathy/massage/chiropractic/counselling. Why would this be any different?

Each of these approaches can be incredibly helpful, and there isn't one right answer for everyone.

What makes my work different is that I'm less interested in asking, "What's the best technique?" and more interested in asking, "What's keeping this person stuck?"

Sometimes the answer lies in the body, sometimes in the nervous system, sometimes in unhelpful patterns of thinking or behaviour. And often it's a combination.

By understanding how those pieces interact, we can work with the underlying pattern rather than just chasing the latest symptom.

Do you work with people who are highly sensitive?

Many of the people I work with describe themselves as highly sensitive and/or neurodivergent, although not everyone uses that label.

Rather than trying to make you less sensitive, we work on understanding your nervous system, reducing overwhelm and helping you use your sensitivity as a strength rather than seeing it as a flaw.

Why don't you use a standard treatment plan?

Because people aren't standard. Two people can arrive with similar symptoms for completely different reasons. I begin by understanding your unique situation, so your sessions are shaped around you rather than around a formula.

Do I need to believe in kinesiology for this to work?

No, but I do ask people to bring an open mind.

You don't need to accept anything on faith, and you're never expected to leave your intelligence at the door. I'm naturally curious and questioning myself, so I welcome thoughtful scepticism.

Throughout a session we'll observe what your body is doing, test and retest where appropriate, and notice what changes.

My aim isn't to convince you of a theory. I's to help you experience results that make sense to you.

What if this doesn't work?

That's a completely understandable question, especially if you've already spent time, money and energy trying different approaches.

No practitioner can honestly promise that their work will help everyone, and I wouldn't want to make that claim.

What I can promise is that we'll take the time to understand your situation properly, agree an approach that makes sense for you and review how things are progressing. If I don't believe I'm the right person to help, I'll say so and, where possible, suggest a more appropriate option.

Many people tell me that, even when their journey isn't straightforward, they leave with a much clearer understanding of what's happening and a practical way forward. Sometimes that understanding becomes the turning point that helps change begin.

Although many people experience physical improvements, I don't measure progress by symptoms alone. Feeling clearer, calmer, more confident and more able to support yourself are equally important parts of lasting change.

What my clients say about working with me

This was the most practical coaching session I’ve had. Absolutely ideal for someone like me with loads of ideas and a mind racing at a hundred miles an hour. I’ve come away with a practical action plan for the next few weeks. Hilary is very thought-provoking, hugely knowledgeable and very inspiring.

Brooke, Data Analyst
Action planning

My body relaxed more deeply than it has in a long time and I could feel myself letting go of long-held tension. I left feeling calmer, looser, and more at ease. I would happily recommend Hilary to anyone struggling with persistent pain, tension, or stress.

Jim, Speaker and Presenter
Releasing pain and tension

I felt safe enough to explore things I don’t often put into words. I came away with new perspectives on how my body responds to stress and the world around me. I’d recommend her to anyone who feels highly sensitive, easily overwhelmed, or curious about understanding themselves more deeply.
