What is kinesiology? What is energy healing? And what happens when we look at health as more than simply treating disease?
I recently joined Glenda Devlin and Lucy Craig on Koast Radio's Health & Wellbeing Show to explore kinesiology, energy healing, the human energy field and the spiritual dimension of health.
Sensitive bodywork can produce an emotional response
Years ago, I was working with a woman whose pelvis and lower back were holding a great deal of tension. As I worked with her body, something suddenly shifted. Her muscles released, and she began to shake and cry.
My first reaction was that this was probably a good thing, because I could see that her back had let go. Her body was releasing tension, and the shaking and emotion seemed to be part of that release.
Since then, I've seen this kind of response many times - and learned more about how the nervous system works. As a particular area of the body begins to soften, someone might take a deep breath, tremble, cry, feel a wave of emotion or suddenly remember something they hadn't thought about for years.
This is often how a longstanding problem begins to shift
A person's posture may have changed. Movement can feel easier. Their breathing may be deeper. Sometimes they simply say, “I don't know what just happened, but I feel different.”
Tension isn't always just a physical problem.
Sometimes the body is holding a pattern that is connected to what we've experienced. Our mind and our body are holding onto stress, fear, overwhelm, pain, or the need to protect ourselves. Often we move on from an experience, but the body continues to respond as though it's still needs to brace or defend itself.
Sometimes the distress associated with physical tension needs to be released for things to change.
That doesn't mean that every ache has an emotional cause, or that every physical release represents a buried memory. But it does demonstrate that our bodies are much more than complex machines and we can't separate our physical self from our thoughts and emotions.
Rather than just trying to make a muscle relax, or change a bad habit, I want to understand what the body is doing, and why.
What is it holding? What is it protecting? What has it learned to do?
And what happens when it discovers that it can let go and do things a bit differently from now on?
For me, bodywork means so much more than just working on the body. And coaching is more than just talking.
Both bodywork and coaching involve listening to the whole person. When we need to put down a burden we've been carrying for a long time, or radically change the way we do things, our whole self ends to be in the conversation.
This is the mindset I bring to both my bodywork and coaching practice. And I firmly believe it is the reason why people often experience significant shifts in the way they think and feel after working with me.

What looks like "just" back pain, neck tension or another physical problem is often your body's way of signalling that something deeper has been building over time.
Perhaps it's not pain that brings you here, but anxiety, burnout, overwhelm or feeling stuck in the same unhelpful patterns, no matter how hard you try to change.

Often there is a connection between physical symptoms in your body and your thoughts or emotions. As well as resolving pain and discomfort immediately, kinesiology and energy healing can also address the patterns that keep recreating the same problem.
When life feels difficult, the stress can affect both body and mind — influencing your emotional wellbeing, physical health and everyday life.
Coaching helps you untangle what’s going on, resolve inner conflict and find a way forwards that works for you. It can help you nip problems in the bud or support positive change in your work, relationships, health and life.

Your persistent pain, stress and overwhelm don't always sit neatly. Sometimes it shows up in your body. Sometimes it shows up in your thoughts, emotions, work, relationships. Oftentimes the same pattern plays out across all of them. My work brings together therapeutic bodywork and coaching to help you understand the underlying pattern, not just treat the surface symptom.
My work is informed by Kinesiology, Energy healing and body-based work, alongside coaching that helps you make sense of what is happening to bring about lasting change.

Over the years I’ve worked with people facing many different challenges.
Some came because of back pain or headaches. Others because of anxiety, burnout, exhaustion or life transitions.
At first these seemed like very different problems.
Gradually I noticed something surprising.
Although the symptoms were different, the underlying patterns were often remarkably similar. The body and mind were telling the same story from different perspectives.
That observation changed the way I work.
Rather than choosing between coaching or bodywork, I began integrating both.
Coaching helps us understand our patterns of thinking and behaviour.
Bodywork helps us notice what the body has learned to hold onto.
Together they offer a more complete picture of why we feel the way we do and how change can happen.
This was the most practical coaching session I’ve had. Absolutely ideal for someone like me with loads of ideas and a mind racing at a hundred miles an hour. I’ve come away with a practical action plan for the next few weeks. Hilary is very thought-provoking, hugely knowledgeable and very inspiring.
My body relaxed more deeply than it has in a long time and I could feel myself letting go of long-held tension. I left feeling calmer, looser, and more at ease. I would happily recommend Hilary to anyone struggling with persistent pain, tension, or stress.
I felt safe enough to explore things I don’t often put into words. I came away with new perspectives on how my body responds to stress and the world around me. I’d recommend her to anyone who feels highly sensitive, easily overwhelmed, or curious about understanding themselves more deeply.
Therapeutic Bodywork at Hilary Dancing Body-Mind Therapeutics uses a combination of gentle, holistic approaches that identify what your body needs on the day and addresses them to restore balance, release tension and support your body's natural ability to heal. My practice fifteen years of training in Touch for Health Kinesiology, Energy Healing, Reiki and somatic practices. I work in the way that suits you, from very practical physical adjustment to more subtle energy balancing.
Kinesiology, as practised by Hilary Dancing Body-Mind Therapeutics, uses gentle muscle testing to help us tune into how your body is feeling today and what it needs in this moment. For physical pain and tension, I will test multiple muscles to find where your body is out of balance and make corrections that restore alignment. Sometimes the problem can be emotional, or to do with food intolerances or environmental irritants. In these cases, we use muscle testing to identify the problem and explore ways to help your body cope better.
Energy healing as practised by Hilary Dancing Body-Mind Therapeutics is similar to Reiki, but with a more exploratory approach. It can be particularly interesting when persistent pain, tension or physical symptoms haven't responded to the approaches you've already tried. It offers a way to explore whether there are deeper energetic, emotional or whole-person factors involved.
It isn't a replacement for medical care, and I don't claim to treat or cure medical conditions. But sometimes a different way of understanding the body can open up possibilities when nothing else seems to be shifting.
Kinesiology, as practiced by Hilary Dancing Body-Mind Therapeutics takes a different approach from massage, physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment. My kinesiology sessions are gentle and are carried out fully clothed, using muscle testing to help identify your body's priorities rather than following a standard treatment protocol. There are no forceful manipulations, sudden jerks or joint "cracking" techniques, which some people find more comfortable.
Rather than focusing only on the area that hurts, kinesiology explores the wider patterns of tension and compensation throughout the body. Together we trace the chain of factors that may be contributing to pain, poor posture or recurring symptoms.
Where appropriate, this can also include the effects of stress and emotions, making kinesiology a truly whole-person approach for those who are open to exploring those connections.
Yes. In fact, stress, anxiety and burnout are some of the main reasons people come to work with me at Hilary Dancing Body-Mind Therapeutics. Rather than simply helping you feel calmer for an hour, I aim to understand why your nervous system has become overwhelmed in the first place. Together, we'll explore the physical, emotional and behavioural patterns that may be keeping you stuck in cycles of stress, anxiety or burnout. The goal is not just temporary relief, but helping your mind and body find a more sustainable way of functioning.
Yes. I offer online coaching sessions for people anywhere in the UK who want support with stress, anxiety, burnout, recurring life patterns or personal growth. While kinesiology and energy healing are generally carried out in person at my Morpeth clinic, there are ways we can work together online using holistic therapy to create good health and create lasting change wherever you are.
Hilary Dancing Body-Mind Therapeutics is based at the Oldgate Therapy Centre in the centre of Morpeth, Northumberland, a 15-minute train ride or short drive from Newcastle.
If you're unsure whether you need holistic therapy or coaching (or you're unsure whether kinesiology, energy healing or a combination is the best thing to help you) don't worry. You don't have to decide on your own. We can have a brief conversation about what's been going on, and together we'll decide which approach is likely to be most helpful for you. Some people benefit most from bodywork, others from coaching, and many find that combining both offers the greatest opportunity for lasting change.
Whether the challenge is showing up in your body, your work or your personal life, help is at hand.
